We here at Wave Maker understand that we have it good. We are fortunate that way, and we want to make sure that we do our best to help those less fortunate. We periodically run or participate in events that allow us to contribute to organizations that are also fighting to make a difference in people's lives—or occasionally directly to the people themselves. And it is all made possible by the amazing support of our customers and other concerned citizens, so we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Here are some of the community outreach efforts we have been part of.
Wave Maker was thrilled to launch our first annual Community Day by partnering with the 26th Cambridge Scouts for a fundraiser BBQ. Thanks to some hungry people they raised $641.26 towards a youth exchange program with scouts in the UK! We also had a community table with information about some local organizations, and a super-fun kids' station with face-painting and more. We look forward to holding more community events as we celebrate being part of Preston.
Through our "beer and a butter tart" fundraiser (thanks to Cambridge Restaurant for providing the butter tarts!) we raised $837 to provide school children access to breakfast and lunches through various food programs run by Nutrition for Learning. The entire program provides healthy food options to over 12,500 students daily.
Our version of the Weathered Souls Black is Beautiful initiative and our fundraising event with Paradigm Shift Productions and all sauced INTOXICATING RECIPES raised over $1,200 for Black Lives Matter Waterloo Region Chapter, to help fight social injustice, and Wisahkotewinowak Gardens, to help provide food for indigenous communities. To everyone who provided a donation, who enjoyed a pint of Black is Beautiful Imperial Stout, and/or attended our fundraising event with Lori (All Sauced) and Steve (Paradigm Shift Productions), thank you!
This worldwide collaboration is brewed to bring awareness to the injustices that people of colour face daily and to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone. As of March 2021, there are 1,207 breweries from 22 countries showing support for equality and fighting against social injustice, and we are proud to be one of them!
Back in November of 2020, we paired up again with Steve, from Paradigm Shift Productions and Lori, from all sauced INTOXICATING RECIPES, with support from @kyky651, @knowledge.on.tap, @jjoelrobinson, @alisha4ft9, @glenfletcher43, @msetch6, @jimmy_fioretti—and others in the community—to raise awareness and funds for the long-standing water crisis the Neskantaga First Nations Band have been living with. An emergency evacuation of the entire band meant that they were hundreds of miles from their homes as Christmas rapidly approached. Other indigenous communities in Northern Ontario, and across Canada, continue to face water advisories as well. Steve at Paradigm Shift spearheaded the silent auction component of the fundraiser and—thanks to all the breweries and other local businesses donations—over $3000 was raised for water systems improvement for their community!
Now available at Wave Maker and in our online store.
We are happy to announce this addition to our business, both because of how amazing the business is AND how amazing the coffee is!
If you are a coffee connoisseur you will know that some of the world's best Arabica beans come from Latin America. In addition to their fresh-roasted coffee being Organic and Fair Trade, Birch Bark Coffee are proud to have earned the Small Producers Symbol showing their commitment to helping on a local level. Offering different beans & roasts that bring subtle hints of rich chocolate, floral, fruits, spices and earthy undertones to your palate, this coffee is the best way to wake up. But at the end of the day the reason we love them so much is that they take the profits from their coffee sales and purchase and install water purifiers for Indigenous families living in communities with water advisories or extremely poor drinking water conditions. Win win!
